Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he loved betting on different card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he played many hours and lose most times. He made some extra money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and concentrate more on poker.

The real improvement in his skills began when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often challenge each other. He had access into a few of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.

He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to move out to Sin City and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the best female players the poker arena today. Howard headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
