Gus Hansen experienced a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only participant to make it to the closing table in 3 of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You might remember one of the largest pots in high stakes poker recorded history against Daniel Negreanu. Gus raked in a massive pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has earned many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the greatest players in the world. While competing in web poker, a different side of Hansen has appeared. He often plays in the 200/400 NL max buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Hansen more often than not buys-in for the minimum of Sixteen Thousand dollars and plays very poorly. He sits there waiting for a good hand and then pushes all-in. I know Gus is a great poker player but certainly not even close to the everyday players at 200/400NL. Unless he is broke, he has little or no reason to sit at the table with the min buy in.
Buying in for the minimum takes a majority of the skill out of big stack poker. Gus is presumed to be 1 of the best players in the world but he cannot buy in for the total dollar value. I believe television can skew our perception of the real world every now and then. The greatest poker players in the world may be players you have won’t have heard about. Gus can be found playing internet poker on Full Tilt. He normally competes in high stakes omaha hold’em and texas holdem. Gus Hansen has shown himself as a tournament player.
