Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some entrants get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same approach in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complex initially, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing assortment of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many players battling for the high, and many trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
