Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many players often get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same notion in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

Although it seems complicated at first, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting range of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several individuals battling for the high, as well as many shooting for the low hand.
